It has become crystal clear to most industry leaders that continuous improvement in their supply chain means optimizing three things: people, processes and technology. In the last decade many companies in Canada have essentially grown up and evolved when it comes to re-engineering the way their supply chains are configured, implementing the latest technology to support these improved processes. In addition, third party logistics providers have filled the gaps where it has made sense for companies to outsource part of their supply chain resulting in improved efficiencies and economies of scale. The transportation providers have also needed to shift with the way they are selling their services, and to whom.
Once we realize this shifting marketplace and the speed at which it is changing, how do we attract the right individuals into our company? And, how do we inspire them to perform at the level of our expectations and beyond? It is a challenge many of our industry leaders are experiencing and often failing to overcome.
Attracting people who take responsibility for being leaders is key to successful hiring. One thing for sure, it has to be more than about the money, which takes it beyond a transactional level. The company needs to be clear about who they are and who they want to be. As the senior manager, you don't have to be the smartest person in the room, but you will benefit if you find the best people - smarter than yourself perhaps. When you recruit great people, draw them into a shared vision of excellence, then give them the responsibility and freedom to pursue that dream - and allow them to even take it to the next level.
Know how to extract independent and creative ideas from your people and understand that leadership is about setting the right example. Learn how to be a terrific motivator and learn the art of releasing energy from your people, not just giving yours. That can be draining. Leaders also know how to listen and are eager to learn and are sensitive to people.
Mastering your leadership skills creates a model of attraction with people that will take your team far. The bottom line to all of this? Becoming an "employer of choice" where you attract the best people is a business strategy that will take companies to where they want to be, and beyond.
